What Is Stipple?
Stipple — also called popcorn ceiling, cottage cheese ceiling or acoustic ceiling — is a textured finish that was applied to ceilings in many Calgary homes built between the 1960s and the early 1990s. The texture was created by spraying a mixture that contained materials such as polystyrene, vermiculite or, in older applications, asbestos.
Stipple was popular because it was fast and inexpensive to apply, it hid imperfections in the drywall beneath, and it provided a degree of acoustic dampening. It was a standard finish in new residential construction for several decades.
Homes built before approximately 1980 may have stipple that contains asbestos. Before any stipple removal work begins in an older home, the material should be tested by a qualified professional. If asbestos is present, removal must be carried out by a licensed abatement contractor in accordance with Alberta regulations.
Why Calgary Homeowners Remove Stipple
Stipple ceilings have fallen out of favour with most homeowners and buyers. The texture looks dated, collects dust and cobwebs, and is difficult to clean. Many homeowners choose to remove stipple as part of a renovation to give their home a more contemporary appearance.
Stipple also makes it difficult to repaint a ceiling. The texture absorbs a large amount of paint, and any imperfections in the application are visible. Homeowners who want a clean, smooth ceiling that is easy to maintain and repaint often choose removal over painting over the existing texture.
Real estate considerations also play a role. Smooth ceilings are generally viewed more favourably by buyers, and removing stipple before listing a home can improve its presentation.
In some cases, stipple has been damaged by water leaks, settling or previous repairs. Damaged or stained stipple is difficult to repair invisibly, and removal may be the most practical option when the texture is in poor condition.
What Is Involved in Stipple Removal?
Stipple removal is a messy, labour-intensive process. The texture is typically wetted to soften it and then scraped from the ceiling surface. The amount of water required and the ease of removal depend on whether the stipple was painted over after it was applied — painted stipple is significantly harder to remove than unpainted stipple.
Once the texture has been removed, the ceiling surface is rarely in a condition that is ready to paint. Scraping typically leaves gouges, tool marks and areas where the drywall paper has been damaged. The ceiling must be skim-coated — a thin layer of joint compound applied across the entire surface — to create a smooth, even finish.
Skim-coating requires skill to execute well. The compound must be applied evenly, allowed to dry, sanded smooth and often applied in multiple coats to achieve a finish that will look good under paint. Imperfections in the skim coat will be visible once the ceiling is painted, particularly under raking light.
The room must be fully protected during stipple removal. Furniture should be removed or covered, floors protected and walls masked. The process generates significant debris and dust.
The full process — removal, skim-coating, priming and painting — typically takes several days per room depending on the size of the space and the condition of the ceiling.
Repairing a Stipple Ceiling
Not every stipple ceiling needs to be fully removed. In many cases, a localized repair is the right approach — and it can save homeowners significant time and cost.
When stipple damage is confined to a specific area — such as around a light fixture, near a window or in a corner affected by a past water leak — it is often possible to repair just that section rather than stripping the entire ceiling.
A skilled painter can remove the damaged texture in the affected area, repair the substrate, and re-apply a matching stipple texture. When done well, a localized repair is nearly invisible and preserves the rest of the ceiling.
One of our Google reviewers specifically described this kind of targeted repair — a small area of stipple damage addressed without disturbing the surrounding ceiling. This is a good example of a situation where a full removal is not necessary and a careful repair delivers a clean result at a fraction of the cost.
Whether a repair or full removal is the right choice depends on the extent of the damage, the condition of the rest of the ceiling and the homeowner's goals. A painter who has assessed the ceiling in person is best placed to advise on the most practical approach.
Painting After Stipple Removal
Once the stipple has been removed and the ceiling has been skim-coated and sanded smooth, the surface must be primed before painting. A drywall primer or PVA primer seals the skim coat, improves adhesion and helps ensure an even finish.
Ceilings are typically painted with a flat or matte finish. Flat paint minimizes the appearance of any minor surface imperfections and reduces glare. Eggshell or satin finishes are sometimes used in areas where the ceiling may need to be wiped down, such as in kitchens or bathrooms.
The number of coats required depends on the colour being applied and the condition of the primed surface. Most ceilings require two coats of paint after priming to achieve a uniform, opaque finish.
Lighting conditions in the room affect how the finished ceiling looks. A smooth ceiling under raking light from a window or a poorly positioned fixture will reveal any surface imperfections that were not visible under diffuse light. This is why the quality of the skim coat and sanding is so important — the paint finish can only be as good as the surface beneath it.
